Chapter Nine

“Not exactly friends, are you?” Abby said dryly moments later as Zach gunned the Honda down the driveway. “Or was that only testosterone talking?”

Zach gave a humorless laugh. “Little of each, I’d say. Lance is very ambitious, but sometimes I wonder if his brains measure up to his aspirations.”

“If he’s in charge of much of Eleni’s business, I wouldn’t underestimate him.” Abby shifted in her seat. “Gretchen mentioned keys. Do you have a key to the garage apartment?”

He glanced down at the ring of keys dangling from the ignition. “Yeah, I think I still have it. Why, did you see something else?”

“Just the curtain. It moved again while you were facing off with Lance.”

“It would be stupid for Eleni to be hiding out there, so close to home. Somebody would have noticed something.”

“Even if they noticed, would they say anything if they were in on it?”

He gnawed on his lower lip. “Probably not. Gretchen is fiercely loyal, as we’ve already seen. And Dora—well, Dora probably wouldn’t notice an elephant in the garden unless she tripped over it.”

“So you can get in there to check it out, if you want?”

“I could, if I wanted to. But I don’t think it’s a good idea to try in daylight. Gretchen would call the police. She’s itching to have me arrested. It’d be the perfect excuse.”

“Or she’d come out and bop you with a frying pan. The last thing you need is another concussion. Zach, how well do you know Dora?”

“Pretty well. She was around all the time after we moved into the house. Even before, we used to see a lot of her. As she said, she and Eleni are very close.”

“But you didn’t live in the house much after it was finished, did you?”

Zach glanced at her, his mouth kicking up at the corner. “Anyone ever tell you you’d make a good lawyer? You’ve got the art of cross-examination down as well as anybody.”

Abby felt a little rush of pleasure at his words. “That’s what David used to say. He’d run a situation past me sometimes—no names, of course. That would violate client confidentiality. He said I had a knack of cutting through the crap and seeing the real picture.”

“Well put. No, I didn’t live in that house much. But I often spoke with Dora whenever I was there. I hope you’re not suspecting her of anything. She’s as transparent as water.”

“Is she?” Abby asked pointedly. “Or does she just want you to think that?”

“No, she is like that,” Zach insisted. “Kind of flaky and fluttery. Not quite with it. Why would you think otherwise?”

“No reason. Just a feeling. And she warned you.”

“Very obliquely. She often told me to be careful, worried about me. Why? Do you think she knows more about that night than she’s saying?”

Abby squirmed under the dark look he gave her. “Maybe. It just seems that she’s too vague about what went on. She says the storm frightened her and then she fell asleep. If you were
